Mist Upon the Water

Southern Harbour: tells the story of the French, Native and Metis people who were evacuated from Drummond Island in 1828, to the British post near Penetanguishene. They became the first settlers of that town. I had several ancestors in that group, including Joseph, mentioned in the lyrics. Many of this group soon took up land in Tiny Twp. And the surrounding area.
Aglow in the Night: is about the first electric lights in Midland in 1882. The song started with a fragment of a letter written by one of the original workers who stated, "I drove the team of horses that hauled the dynamo into the mill." Lighting allowed the prosperous mill to operate twenty-four hours a day. It had the first electric dynamo in Ontario, and as far as research shows, in Canada.
Giant's Tomb: This is the Huron version of the story of the "Sleeping Giant". It tells how the giant formed the complex of bays and island that make up our distinctive landscape. From a distance, the island resembles a reclining human form.
The Loon's Necklace: This story was told to me by a member of the Loon at the Christian Island Reserve.
Lifeline: This is about the Christian Island ferry, the R.A. Hoey. It ran for many years between the island and Cedar Point, usually providing the only link with the mainland. It was, indeed, at times, a lifeline for emergency medical services or search and rescue operations.
Kittyhawk: This song tells the story of Orville Wright, of the famous Wright brothers, who made the first recorded manned flight. Orville had a summer cottage for many years, in the Georgian Bay area. His boat was named, Kittyhawk, after his plane. He would travel by train or car from Dayton, Ohio to Penetanguishene and then by boat up the shore.
Borrowed from Our Children: This song traces the environmental effects of industry on the landscape of Huronia. It promotes the Native concept that we borrow all the resources of the earth from future generations. They are placed in trust with us to manage carefully, with an eye to the future.
Midsummer's Isle: This is about the search for wisdom, in the framework of the legend of the mythical Isle of Avalon.
